ZuriQ is a Swiss quantum hardware company building a scalable trapped-ion quantum computer using a natively 3-D architecture designed to overcome the scaling limits of conventional ion traps. Founded in 2024 by Pavel Hrmo, Tobias Sägesser, and Shreyans Jain, the company spun out of ETH Zurich, one of the world's leading science and technology universities, on the back of research conducted in the laboratory of Prof. Jonathan Home.


ZuriQ's distinguishing capability is its use of micro fabricated Penning traps, which confine ions with a combination of static electric and magnetic fields rather than the oscillating radio-frequency fields used in conventional Paul traps. This approach allows ions to be moved freely in two and three dimensions, rather than along one-dimensional chains, and is compatible with industrial silicon chip fabrication, offering a route past the connectivity bottlenecks that constrain today's trapped-ion systems as qubit numbers grow. The underlying technique was demonstrated in a 2024 Nature publication, in which the team transported a single ion across a chip to trace out the letters of the ETH logo, and the company has set out to arrange tens of thousands of ions in a reconfigurable grid of high-fidelity qubits.


Headquartered in Zurich, ZuriQ is targeting applications in fields including pharmaceuticals, chemistry, and logistics, positioning its reconfigurable ion architecture as a scalable route towards industrially useful quantum computing.
